I spend a year trying to write about bliss, which mostly involves not writing about it at all. Instead of writing, I go for walks, spend time with friends when allowed, dance to pop music in my bedroom. I think about God, a lot. Realise it’s not a popular topic amongst friends and family. Some people I know are into it, like Hasib, and we go to a Christian church in Brunswick, a first for both of us. After the service, a woman named Beryl tells us that she doesn’t believe that God is some guy in the sky. Says if that’s your conception of God then your God is too small.
In lockdown I take hundreds of photos of the sun. The light is so severe that sometimes it feels like my phone might break trying to capture it. My attraction to blinding light becomes obsessive. I think this is partly a desire to be obliterated, by ecstasy, holiness, something like that.

Bliss: of earthly happiness and spiritual joy, and later, in Old English, the joy of heaven. I’m wondering when bliss was transported from earth to heaven. For me, bliss is rooted in earthliness, that which is real, which is felt. Bliss is reachable, not abstract, and never far away.

I’ve fallen off my skateboard and smashed my head on the concrete and it feels good for a second before it doesn’t. Something about seeing my blood outside of my body is pleasant to me. It’s different to menstrual blood, which is boring and too gendered; different to the sterility of blood tests. This feels like something I’m not supposed to see, which makes me excited to see it. This brief wonderment is eclipsed by my newfound awareness of how weak my body is. How thick my body feels with pain and how little I can do about it.
Bless: etymologically unrelated to bliss, but culturally the two have informed each other. Bless: to make holy, give thanks. Before this, the Proto-Germanic: hallow with blood, from Pagan rituals of sprinkling blood on altars. I don’t like the idea that devotion requires sacrifice. Too self-flaggelate-y. Shouldn’t love be nourishing?

My friends pull me out of the hole and drive me to hospital. I leave my blessing behind.

Retroreflection occurs when light rays hit a surface and reflect radiation back to the source. Different to reflection, where the light scatters; retroreflection is precise, focused. Worn by tradies, cyclists, technical wear fashion heads—for safety in low light and for style. It’s used on the moon, too, where humans have placed retroreflectors on the surface. Scientists started shooting laser beams at the retroreflectors to calculate the distance between the moon and Earth. They still do it, sending out beams of light and having them bounce back to us.

My dad would always complain about cyclists not wearing high vis gear at night—so dangerous, you can’t even see them! When I was seventeen I sat in McDonald’s and it was a bright hot day and there was a loud crash outside. A cyclist hit by a truck. They carried him away in the middle of the day and the sun was shining and you could see everything.

Ann Demeulemeester’s spring 1998 show “Corpse Humain” (Human Body) is one of the designer’s most revered collections. It’s iconic for many reasons, one being its white tank tops that say ‘holy’ in black cursive script. The collection speaks to the beauty of the human body, with lively drapes that mould to the wearer and thoughtful cuts made with real people in mind. Demeulemeester is masterful in creating a kind of nonchalant beauty, which the holy tanks embody with grace. Speaking of the collection, Demeulemeester says: One of the first things I decided was that I would make 2,000 tank tops with the word holy on them and give one to everybody who comes to the show, expressing that you are holy to me, that everybody is holy.

Holy: whole, uninjured. The word holy is not just a message, but a way of pointing to the construction of the garment. A way of saying: look at what I made for you. Take this offering—be holy with me.
